What is Coaching?

There are thousands of definitions of coaching but here is how we like to explain it.

Take a classic Problem Solving Process such as Define (identify current and desired state), Analyse (gathering data, looking at root cause), Decide (assessing options, identifying costs and benefits), Act (plan implementation) and Review (monitor results, report and learn).

Now extend the process to not just solving Problems be also to taking Opportunities, succeeding with Challenges, obtaining Clarity and dealing with Change.

Add a few key principles that underlie coaching as opposed to other developmental activities, namely:

  • The client has the resources to resolve their own problems or opportunities – the coach develops this resourcefulness through his use of questions, challenging and support.
  • In addressing the issue that is current, the past and the future need to be considered. Coaching is about going forward so we need to consider what future the client wants while also considering what clues are in the past that may impact the present and the future.
  • The client sets the agenda – they are the driver.
  • Awareness is the key change agent, not to do lists or advise. When one becomes aware than one has a choice to do something or not with that awareness. Awareness is best raised in a trusted non-judgmental environment hence the coach is always focused on ensuring that the relationship is confidential, respected, adult to adult.

Mix the process with the above principles and you have a hugely impactful, positive and self-driven developmental experience.
